State report shows higher projected cost for possible Bedford train station

BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) A new report is showing higher projected costs for a passenger train station in Bedford.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation released a study this week, showing a train station in Bedford would cost anywhere from $5.7 million to $11.4 million.

The agency estimates a Bedford stop would add 2,800 riders for Amtrak.

A similar report commissioned by The Bedford/Franklin Regional Rail Initiative (BFRRI), a group of local officials and residents who support the train stop, offered more optimistic numbers.

The BFRRI report released in March estimated a cost of $2 million for construction of a train station and a projected annual ridership gain of 26,000 passengers for Amtrak. The study was performed by the engineering firm Wendel.

Amtrak is planning to extend service from Lynchburg to Roanoke next year and Bedford leaders want their town to be a stop along the way.
