Sweet Briar Work Weeks bring alumnae in from around the world to help

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) Sweet Briar College is hosting its 3rd annual "Sweet Work Weeks".

Alumnae and friends of the College come back to campus to volunteer and clean up the facilities.

Landscaping to painting, they do it all. Volunteers and alumnae travel in from as far as New Mexico and Paris to pitch in however they can.

The Work Weeks started after the college experienced financial difficulties and almost closed.

"We started the moment we got our keys back three years ago in July. And so we showed up for three weeks with no direction. We just walked around and said okay we need to do this- clean bulletin boards, trim the ivy," said Ann Gateley, Alumna, Sweet Briar College.

Now, three years later, over 150 people come out to help during the three week program.

Gateley traveled from New Mexico to help and is staying for the entire three weeks. When asked why she simply said, "Because it's my college.....it's a special place."

They will continue working through August 18th.
