AMHERST CO., Va. (WDBJ7) WDBJ photojournalist Allen Francis and morning anchor Garrett Turner were invited to sit in on a drum practice of some of the members of the Monacan Indian Nation.

The Monacan people are very proud about their heritage. Karenne Wood, who is Monacan herself, admits today her people may not look like what you'd expect but they are still very proud of their culture. Many of the Monacan people still live in Amherst County.

You can see more of the drum and singing at the 24th annual Monacan Indian Nation Powwow this weekend. On Friday, May 20, there will be a Special Students Day from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. The drum competition will be held on Saturday, May 21st from 10 a.m to 9 p.m and on Sunday May 22nd from 10 a.m to 6 p.m.
