Transportation museum to develop plans for major new exhibit

A new project could mean big changes for the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

On Thursday, the museum said a donor has provided $150,000 to begin planning for a major new exhibit.

Executive Director Bev Fitzpatrick says it will tell the story of Roanoke through its railroad history.

"We now talk trains to brains. We had the brains for trains, the best in the world," Fitzpatrick told WDBJ7, Thursday afternoon. "So don't slight Roanoke. Roanoke's a great place and it's had an influence in all of railroading."

Planning could take a year or two. And fundraising will follow before the exhibit is completed.

The auto gallery and aviation gallery won't be affected, but Fitzpatrick says the new exhibit will transform about two-thirds of the current museum.
