SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) Carter Turner says Democratic energy and a vigorous debate on the issues will help him win the 8th district seat in the House of Delegates

Turner kicked off his campaign Thursday afternoon, rallying supporters in Salem.

Though the the district has traditionally sent Republicans to Richmond, Turner says he believes he's in tune with the issues that are important to the people here.

"I'm fighting for their security. I'm fighting for their economic security. I'm fighting for their health care security. I'm fighting for their security on our roads," Turner told WDBJ7. "People need to feel safe. They need to feel like they have options, that they can improve their lives."

Turner will face Joe McNamara in November.

Thursday was the deadline for Republicans to file for the nomination, and no other candidates stepped forward.
