Turtle with ‘punk rock hair’ on endangered reptile list

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A strange looking turtle with what looks like a punk rock hairstyle is on a new list of endangered reptiles.

It’s the Australian Mary River turtle and that stuff that looks like hair is actually algae.

It grows on the animal’s head because the turtle can live underwater for up to three days. That's because of its unusual ability to breathe underwater through its butt, known as its cloaca.

A reptile biologist says the pet trade has led to the loss of an entire generation of Mary River turtles.
