CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) -- UVA students gathered Tuesday night at the statue of Thomas Jefferson for a peaceful protest demanding justice and equality.

The group was made up of students, community members, and social justice advocates.

Students chanted as the statue of Thomas Jefferson was being covered by a tarp.

Many spoke out against white supremacy and some speakers at the event called Jefferson names like "racist" while others gave testimony on their own struggle for social justice.
