United Way in Lynchburg collects 6,500 pounds of food for holiday season

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) About 33,000 people living in Central Virgina are food insecure. That means that they don't have regular access to meals.

United Way spent the month of October collecting donations to address that concern. They received over 65 hundred pounds of food from business and organizations to distribute to local food banks. Just in time for the holiday season.

"This is a time that we actually know that other food banks and food pantries have said they are almost depleted. Right around the holiday season- around the Thanksgiving, winter, there is such a need," said Dawn Wise, Director of Community Engagement for United Way.

12 different food banks and food pantries picked up two big boxes each. This is the largest amount of donations the drive has received since it started six years ago.
