Veterans Affairs rolls out new veteran ID card

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - The Department of Veterans Affairs says it is now offering an easier way for veterans to receive special discounts and services.

The VA just rolled out the new, free Veterans ID card.

It's for honorably discharged veterans who don't have a medical I-D card with the VA.

Brett Robbins with the Salem VA said it's also a safer way vets can access discounts, compared with traditional paperwork.

"By offering this card to our veterans then the veteran does not have to carry around his or her DD-214," he said, referring to discharge paperwork. "Because, you know, it has a lot of personal information on it that if you lose it you don't want shared."

The card was created through legislation passed in 2015 to honor veterans.

To get one, Robbins says veterans can apply online at www.vets.gov
