DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) In Danville, the Virginia National Guard is asking the city to leave the Squire Armory.

The city has shared the space with the National guard since 1964.

The Parks and Recreation Department primarily uses the gym and two small office spaces in the building.

City officials say it's the biggest gym the city has. The Virginia National Guard is evaluating its force protection measures at its facilities across the state.

"The world has changed and we have to take a look at everything we can possibly to do make sure that we're keeping our soldiers and our facilities protected."

The National Guard says this process will take time and it will be working with the city throughout the transition.
