Virginia man's online petition for animal safety gains attention

(WDBJ7) A Virginia man's online petition for animal safety is gaining a lot of attention.

The petition on change.org was started for new legislation to require dog owners to keep their pets inside during extreme heat and cold. More that 12,000 people have signed on.

The petition's creator says he sees this as both good and bad.

"It's bad because a lot of people that are supporting me -- or supporting the effort I should say -- are doing that because they personally have dealt with neighbors, or friends, or relatives who leave their dogs outside," Gary Sweeney of Guardians of Rescue said.

Sweeney says other states have enacted similar legislation.
