While Northam won Virginia, majorities in Western Virginia sided with Gillespie

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) While Ralph Northam won the overall vote in last night's election, a majority of people in our region voted for his opponent.

Republican Ed Gillespie won 24 of the 25 Virginia counties in the WDBJ7 viewing area.

Montgomery was the only county in all of southwest Virginia that gave the majority of its votes to Northam. The Democrat had support from 53% of voters in that locality, compared to Gillespie's 44%.

The highest percentage for Gillespie in our region was in Bland County, where 80% of voters chose the Republican.

Northam's highest percentage in our region came from the city of Lexington, where he won 64% of the vote.
