Why is Virginia for lovers?

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia has lots of great qualities ranging from its beautiful lakes to picturesque mountain views but if you're not from around these parts, how would you know what makes the place we call home so special. The push to get the word out started back in 1969.

“Someone came up with the idea of how about Virginia is for mountain lovers, Virginia is for history lovers, Virginia is for beach lovers. They decided to take a little bit of that and refine it to just Virginia is for Lovers.

“What's interesting to me is in the last year or two we've picked back up on the naming of mountain lovers, craft beer lovers, history lovers, so it's really picked up tremendously. It's going to be 50 years old next year, and it's one of the oldest and most recognized state tourism slogans in the country,” said Catherine Fox of Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Just think about it, depending on where you live you can pack up the car and take a day trip to lots of different places. And there's always something going on, like the Hot Air Balloon Rally in Lexington, and even the Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax. And that’s just right here in Southwest Virginia. There's Virginia Beach and countless historical sites like Colonial Williamsburg.

Our Commonwealth has a lot going for it even when it comes to popping the big question.

Catherine says she got engaged at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She says another popular spot is the Roanoke Star.

“It's the outstanding scenery that we have here and that really lends to the backdrop and the opportunity,” she explained.

Whether you love the scenery, the history, or are just ready to settle down with the one you love, Virginia is for lovers.
