Wythe County encourages students to "Strive for Five"

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) Wythe County is encouraging students to Strive for Five.

Superintendent Scott Jefferies said some schools had over 15-precent chronic absenteeism last year. The Strive for Five initiative encourages all students to attend classes five days a week. He says every single day matters when it comes to getting an education.

"If they come, we know we can give them a quality education, prepare them for what their next level is, and try to maximize their potential," Jefferies said. "But they cannot do that unless they come to school."

The Strive for Five campaign kicks off across the county Friday, August 10th, ahead of the first five-day school week.
