LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The Liberty softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to Ohio University Thursday in the NISC regional in Lynchburg.
But following the 12 inning decision, the Flames bounced back with a 4-3 win in the "if necessary game," to win the regional and advance to the championship round.
The Flames manufactured 3 runs in the third inning and then held on for the one run win. Kenzie Friesen (13-3) earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, walking one in five innings. Chase Cassady tossed two hitless innings, striking out one to earn her first save.
Liberty will now host the final rounds. The other five Championship Round participants will be Kennesaw State, Cal Poly, Lamar, Weber State and Illinois State. Cal Poly and Illinois State hold the two highest RPIs in the bracket and will get byes to Monday's second round.
The Championship Round begins on Sunday with two games. Cal Poly will face Lamar at 4 p.m., before the host Lady Flames face Weber State at 7 p.m. There will be four games on Monday followed by three on Tuesday and the final round on Wednesday. The semifinal and final rounds will air live on ESPN3.com.
