Liberty prepares for transition to FBS

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The Liberty football team held their annual spring game on Saturday, and this upcoming season will be an interesting one for the Flames.

Because of their transition from an FCS program to an FBS program, they can't compete for a Big South Championship, are ineligible for the FCS playoffs this year, and will eventually be bowl eligible in 2019.

"We've been fortunate and blessed, eight out of the last ten years, we've been conference champions," said Head Coach, Turner Gill. "Even though it may not be technically conference champions as far as this next season, we can still control that as far as winning as many games as we can. So we're all competitors. None of us enjoy losing, and so, we're going to go out there and try to win every single football game as best as we can."

The Flames will be young at some key positions this season, including Sophomore Running Back, Frankie Hickson, and he says the upcoming season will still carry plenty of meaning.

"Every single year, we come out and compete," said Hickson. "Every single game, we compete. Every single drive, we compete. That's just what we do, and that's going to lead to victory, after victory, after victory. With having a great year this year, leads into a great year next year. And then when it actually does count, when it is for real, they'll know who Liberty is."
