Salem at Patrick Henry

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) At Merrill Gainer Stadium at Patrick Henry, the Patriots hadn't tasted victory against Salem in 23 years.

These Patrick Henry kids were just a twinkle in their dad's eye that long ago.

Salem up 7-0. Patriots have their sights set on paydirt. Brandon Smith slips by a tackler as he takes it right up the gut to even things up with the Spartans at 7.

Ensuing Salem possession, Luke Owen takes the hand off but then coughs up the ball! Zakee Flint would recover and the Patriots would score on the next play to take a 14-7 lead.

But don't count Salem out, they would come right back at PH. Jack Gladden has all kinds of time and finds a WIDE OPEN Joseph Quinn who puts his defender on skates before diving into the corner of the end zone to tie this one up at 14 in the first quarter.

2nd quarter, Spartans knocking on the door Gladden flips a short pass to Van Richardson who fights his way in for another Salem score to retake the lead 21-14.

The Patriots desperate to snap that 23 year slump, Grant Jennings locks and loads to a streaking Dayshawn Caldwell who somehow holds onto it despite the tough defense for a 70 yard touchdown!

As good as that looked Salem was able to get away with a barnburner 56-42 win.
