Funding sought for projects in Henry, Franklin, Campbell Counties

Federal funding for three projects in our region has cleared one hurdle in Washington.

A spokesperson for Fifth District Representative Tom Perriello says the Congressman pushed through three requests for local construction funding in the US Government's FY10 Transportation and Housing Appropriations Bill.

The bill would include funding for the following projects:

  • $950,000 for replacement of the Clements Mill Bridge (Franklin County):  This project will replace the Clements Mill Bridge on Route 687 between Red Valley and the communities of Burnt Chimney and Wirtz. The funding will go toward construction of a new single-lane bridge, which is also part of the county's upcoming bicycle plan.
  • $300,000 for Smith Rivers Trail project (Henry County/Martinsville): This program will fund construction of a 4.5-mile paved trail running along an abandoned rail corridor through Henry County and the City of Martinsville.
  • $350,000 for site preparation and construction of Timberlake Library (Campbell County): The funds will provide for development and construction of a new library and community center in Timberlake. The community center is being constructed in several phases, and the first phase will include recreational facilities and a public library for use by the entire community.

The funding bill still needs approval from the US Senate and President Obama before money can be funneled into the projects.
