A lane closure that is causing backups on a busy Lynchburg thoroughfare could stay in place for several weeks.
Inspectors found damage to a bridge on Candlers Mountain Road Thursday and quickly shut down one lane for repairs. The bridge carries drivers over a set of railroad tracks in front of River Ridge Mall.
VDOT says it's working with Norfolk-Southern Rail and Amtrak to expedite insurance and other approvals needed to fix the bridge.
It has also hired Burleigh Construction of Concord to perform the repairs.
In the mean time, traffic is backing up onto Route 460 and a ramp that connects drivers with the area near Thomas Road Baptist Church. VDOT is asking drivers to use an alternate route until construction is complete.
The damaged bridge is more than 50 years old, predating the heavy traffic that now passes over it. It was built in 1958 and reconstructed in 1976.
