Questions of privacy have come up in the Franklin County School District.

Kenneth Hodges is upset at some of the new documents parents have to show this year in order to verify where they live.  Parents must show one of the following:

  • A mortgage
  • Rental agreement
  • Deed

Plus they'll also have to show one of the following:

  • A tax receipt
  • Home insurance policy
  • Payroll stub.

Many agree it's going too far.

"You know your mortgage this, or mortgage that, and personal property that's too private, that's too private," said Merle Eames, concerned great-grandparent.

"To me, they're doing everything they can to find out, and what people own, and they're trying to find all the information they can about the people to see, it looks like to me they're trying to find out what people can afford," said Kenneth Hodges, concerned parent.

But school officials says that's not what's going on here.

"What we're asking is to verify residency.  We're not even wanting to handle the documents, we're wanting the parents to point here's my name and here's my address," said Assistant Superintendent Sue Rogers.

Administrators say they've been doing this at the high school and middle school levels already, and only now are bringing elementary campuses into the mix.  The information, they say, is for a new database, and this will be the only year currently enrolled students have to share it.

"This is the first I've heard of it, and what's the need and point of needing to know this?," asked Sandra Ida, concerned parent.

Still some parents are feeling exposed.  But with classes starting Wednesday, they'll comply, like it or not.
