Heavy storm damage in Halifax County

UPDATE 8:00 p.m. Monday

Emergency crews are asking people in Halifax County and South Boston to stay indoors tonight.

They are also asking that you do not call 911 to report power outages, only emergencies.

A tree fell on an apartment building in South Boston. Four families living there are staying in a hotel, provided by the Red Cross.

There are trees down on Jeffress Street.

Every road in Halifax County's been reopened, except Jeffress Street.

6,000 customers in Halifax County are still without power. One fire department is without power. Most of South Boston is without power.

There are no reports of serious injuries

The National Weather Service told emergency managers this was a fast moving storm and one of the most impressive they've seen on the radar all summer.

The County sent out a 'Code Red' alert 20 minutes before the storm hit, which is an early-warning alert system for residents who subscribe to it.

News7 has crews in Halifax County.

There are several reports of trees and power lines down in the area from Ringgold in Pittsylvania County, east through Halifax County and South Boston.

About 50 trees are down around South Boston including one on an apartment building and another into a back porch.

Numerous power lines are down in town, as well.

Several trees and power lines are down in Nathalie.

There are also trees down across railroad tracks in Scottsburg.

The damage was caused by fast moving storm late this afternoon.
