Arrest made in Bedford infant death

An arrest has been made in the death of an eight-month-old in Bedford.

An autopsy determined Marissa Burnett was the victim of a homicide in December 2008.

Friday,  police arrested 25-year-old Cecilia Leigh Burnette and charged her with second-degree murder and felony child abuse.

She is being held without bond at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.

UPDATE from December 5, 2008 Press Release which provided the following information:

On September 2, 2008 Officers responded to 1114 Maiden Lane in the City of Bedford regarding a possible injury to an eight (8) month old child, Marissa Burnette.  The child was transported to Bedford Memorial Hospital and then to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where it was pronounced deceased.  The child's body was transported to the Medical Examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

The completed autopsy report has been received by the Bedford Police Department and the cause of death has been determined to be homicide.  Per Commonwealth's Attorney, Randy Krantz, a special grand jury will meet in January 2009 to hear testimony.

The Bedford Police Department is continuing their investigation into this incident and no other information will be released at this time.

On October 9, 2009 City of Bedford Police arrested Cecilia Leigh Burnette, age twenty-five, of Bedford for Second Degree Murder and Felony Child Abuse as a result of the investigation into the death of eight month old Marissa Burnette. 

Ms. Burnette was taken to Blue Ridge Regional Jail where she is being held without bond.
