A Dublin man who served his area fire departments for 27 years was remembered Thursday in a big way.

It's clear Joey Calfee's heart was always at the fire department.

His big smile touched the lives of hundreds in the Dublin area and that's why they all had to be there to say goodbye.

Joey Calfee passed away in his sleep Sunday at the age of 50.

He developed a mental handicap after an accident as a child.

Joey was never elected mayor, but he was a big hit here.

"He never met a stranger, no matter where he was and he would do anything for anybody. That's the way he was," says his cousin Lillian Wims.

Joey was a 27 year member of the Dublin, Radford and Newbern Fire Departments and the Pulaski County Lifesaving Crew.

His deep commitment and service to those departments brought out more than 100 firefighters and rescue workers from all over Southwest Virginia.

His funeral was standing room only.

"He was always smiling. He was always a friend. He always wanted friends," says Kenny Hancock with the Southwest Virginia Firefighter's Association.

Joey spent hours at a time working at the fire departments, and he loved being a part of that brotherhood.

"I'd like to say he was a legend here and everybody just like him here and we're just really going to miss him," says Dublin Fire Chief Ronnie McClure.
