McDonnell and Deeds hit campaign trail in southwest Virginia

Republicans are hoping for "Cheers not tears" on Election night.

That's just one of the sentiments expressed on a campaign stop in Rocky Mount Thursday afternoon.

The state republican ticket of Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli stopped in Danville and Martinsville before taking in some Franklin County hospitality.

"We decided early on to earn the trust of the Virginia voter, to focus on quality of life problems people are facing right now. It's the jobs, the economy, transportation, it's schools, it's energy, it's government spending, so we focused on that from the very beginning and offered detailed solutions and I think people have responded very well to that," says Republican Candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell.

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele was also with the group to lend his support.

The men will be combining business and pleasure Thursday night- as the campaign trail takes them to the Virginia Tech game.

Meantime, democrat Creigh Deeds says the polls don't matter.

Thursday afternoon, he paid a visit to the Democratic headquarters in downtown Roanoke, where he rallied the troops.

And personally manned one of the phone banks that will be critical to the campaign's effort to get out the vote.

"The only poll that matters is November third. If we do our work between now and then, if we never give up, we work as hard as we can until seven o'clock Tuesday, we're going to win this election," says Democratic Candidate for governor Creigh Deeds.

Deeds says many Virginians are just beginning to focus on the race, and the large number of undecided voters could allow him to win.
