A VMI cadet has passed away following a training event.

John Alexander Evans, who was 19 and from Maryland, collapsed in his Barracks room after completing a 10-mile march.

It was part of the training leading up to the annual 23-mile march from Harrisonburg to the battle of Newmarket, a tradition for each freshman class.

He was pronounced dead shortly after noon Saturday at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital.  The cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner.

Those who knew him remember Evans as having a lot of determination and heart.

"A lot of the runs he went on, he may not have been the fastest, but he did put out all the way to the end, he pushed through all the way," says Cadet Jason Barnes.

"You could just tell right away, he just had so much determination and he was not going to quit no matter what," says Cadet Stephen Harstmann.

School officials say Saturday's training activity was not difficult compared some other events.  There are always EMT crews close by during physical exercises.
