One business is bringing some good will to a community in Roanoke.
Goodwill Industries of the Valleys helps people in 31 counties in Virginia. The new Goodwill Jobs Campus on Melrose Avenue in Roanoke will support that effort in a bigger way.
Thursday, tours of the new facility were available to the public.
"This jobs campus is allowing us to continue serving the community and to give back," explains Kelly Sandridge, a spokesperson for Goodwill.
Anywhere from 125 to 175 people with disabilities earn a pay check at the center every day.
"One of our goals is to let employers know the value of hiring somebody with a disability," says Sandridge.
"Everybody who comes through this program is a success story one way or the other," says Medicaid Services Coordinator Lateefah Trent, who works for Goodwill. "They've either proved socialization skills, independence skills, physical awareness or mental awareness."
The facility is also meant to help those who are disadvantaged and who have trouble finding a job. At the updated work center, people can get help with their resumes and job searches, as well as job training.
"Nobody wants to be out of work, nobody wants to struggle, everybody wants to give back to their community, and everybody wants the pride, dignity and self respect that comes from work," says Sandridge.
