Ground was broken Friday for a new regional jail in Madison Heights. The 380 bed complex will replace the current jails in Amherst and Appomattox Counties. It will also allow a jail in Moneta to close.
Men and women will be housed in minimum, medium and maximum security cells. The $51 million project has been in the works since the 1990's. When finished, the facility will create 100 new jobs.
"Certainly should be an economic boom for this particular area of Amherst County. Water and sewer lines are down here. Utility lines and so forth. We're real excited about breaking ground and getting going," said Elton Blackstock, administrator for Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
Construction on the jail will start in the next month. It's scheduled to open at the end of 2011.
