Unusually wet weather has led officials in Campbell County to enact a Leaf Burning Ban.
Starting Friday, November 20, leaves can not be burned in the area west of the railroad tracks at Lawyers Road and north of Goggins Road and Buffalo Creek (including the Crest Haven Estates and Wildwood Subdivisions) until further notice.
These areas were designated for the ban because they are densely populated and officials believe people living in there would be sensitive to heavy smoke.
Campbell County Fire Marshall Rodney Lawson says recent rainfall has created a situation where leaves have fallen quickly and are unable to dry sufficiently.
Lawson says these conditions cause leaves to produce excessive amounts of smoke when burned. Burning of wet or damp leaves causes a smoldering effect, which combined with the humidity, produces a cloud of dense smoke that lingers for several hours.
