The annual Marines' Toys for Tots program kicked off Friday night at the Virginia Tech hockey game at the Roanoke Civic Center.
It was the perfect opportunity since thousands of fans came out to see the Hokies take on U-V-A.
The Marines says the state of the economy makes their job at a little harder this year.
These Marines are stepping up their efforts this year.
A Roanoke based company is about to head off to Afghanistan and some of these toys will be donated to their families.
Last year, the local Toys for Tots program brought in more than 45,000 toys for children.
