( John Woike ) Take note of the empty seats in the background of the above photo. I have covered women's college basketball long enough to understand it has a limited national, regional, state, county, city, street and split-level appeal. I get it. What I don't get is the mentality event organizers have about exacerbating the obvious disconnect by alienating those who love it by charging ridiculous sums of money to come to NCAA games and park there. The crowds in Bridgeport for the first- and second-rounds were stunningly bad, embarrassing even. But I do not blame UConn fans for turning away. I blame greed and the lack of understanding about the true circumstances faced by the core of fans who love women's basketball. The WNBA treats its fans with far more respect. |
