One foot in front of another -to raise awareness of a devastating condition.
Saturday morning, hundreds came out for the annual heartwalk at Roanoke County's Greenhill Park.
The event sponsored by the American Heart Association works to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease.
For many of these walkers the event was personal.
"They do a lot of good things. I work in the heart unit at Roanoke Memorial and feel like it should be funded," says Riner resident Karen Bird.
Adds Roanoke resident Nikki Hooper, "My Paw-Paw and some other members of my family have had a history of heart disease and stroke and I just think it's a great cause to bring awareness to people who may not know much about it."
Heart disease and stroke are reportedly the number one cause of death in Western Virginia.
Organizers hoped to raise 350-thousand dollars with Saturday's event.
