Ask any gym owners when the most popular time of day to work out is, and he or she will tell you its before or after people get to work.

But which of those is better for your health?

It depends.

"If you're trying to lose weight, the best time to do cardio is in the morning before you eat breakfast," said Bobby Simpson of Gold's Gym in Roanoke County.

Simpson says when blood sugar is low, like it is before breakfast in the morning, it creates more fat burn as long as you remember to eat well.

Nutrition is also important for right after a workout, "If you want to keep your metabolism going, you have to eat something nutritional immediately following your workout," said Simpson.

"Don't get hung up on the calories you're eating after you work out," he said "if you're going to keep your metabolism going, you have to feed it."

Simpson also says not to get into a habit of weighing yourself constantly.  That the way you lose weight is coming up with an eating and workout plan and sticking to it.  Simpson says not to get tied down to a number on the scale; that if you get a workout and eating plan and stick to it, the weight will come off.

After taking last week off because of a knee issue, I'm back pounding the pavement this week.  Thanks to some orthotics and WDBJ7 photojournalist Adam Ward's knee brace, I'm back at it.  Definitely lost a little bit of my fitness after taking the week off, but we're back at it.
