The big turnout at Sunday's horse races was the biggest since Northeast Area Horse Racing took over the Aberdeen races in 1997, said Mike Schmidt, general manager of the horse-racing organization.

Schmidt estimated that almost 3,000 people turned out for Sunday's races at the Brown County Fairgrounds. The betting handle for the day totaled $66,873.

Attendance is always greatest during the Memorial Day weekend, which concludes the Aberdeen horse meet, but Sunday's crowd “was above and beyond” the norm, Schmidt said.

He hopes the crowd will be as big for the final races of the year, which begin at 1 p.m. today.
