Carl Deffenbaugh is the Sports Reporter at WDBJ7. He came to Roanoke in 2011 after two years as an anchor and reporter in central Pennsylvania. He is responsible for coverage of the area colleges and high schools as well as fill-in anchoring duties.
During Carl’s time at Blue Ridge Cable-11, he covered Michael Vick’s return to football, Stephen Strasburg’s rise through the minor leagues, and numerous postseason runs by local high school teams.
Carl co-anchored and produced High School Game Night, a weekly football pregame show that was nominated for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy for Best Sports Program Series.
After growing up in Maryland, Carl attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism outside Chicago. Before graduating in 2009, he anchored Sports Night, which won the 2008 College Emmy for Best Newscast. While his background is in the Big Ten, he is excited to be in ACC country.
Outside of work, Carl is an avid Ultimate Frisbee player. While he grew up on the east coast, he has always rooted for the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos. Please feel free to drop a note with a story idea or how WDBJ7 can better cover your hometown sports.
