They didn't meet this time, but Senate candidates Tim Kaine and George Allen worked the same room in Lynchburg Friday afternoon.
Both were speaking to a meeting of young farmers, hosted by the Virginia Farm Bureau.
On plans to reduce the federal debt, Kaine said programs that farmers support will be threatened if the country adopts a cuts-only approach, while Allen said the last thing the nation needs is additional spending.
"I think the right way to balance the budget is to make cuts, and I'd make 2 or 3 dollars of cuts for every dollar of revenue, but I do think we need more revenue," Kaine said.
"I don't think we ought to be raising taxes on folks," Allen countered. "I think raising taxes does not create any jobs. Higher taxes are going to be harmful to our already weak economy."
The group gave Kaine a polite reception, but Allen received a standing ovation when he called for an end to the estate tax, the issue that generated the most questions during Friday's event.
Kaine called on the House of Representatives to pass the farm bill that cleared the Senate last month.
