Regular citizens can get a hands-on feel for what it’s like to be a U.S. Border Patrol agent during the 2013 Citizen’s Academy hosted by El Centro Sector Border Patrol.

The six-week program is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Wednesday, Jan. 30 through March 6.

It gives citizens an inside look at what it’s like to be a Border Patrol agent and a Customs and Border Protection officer with access granted to U.S. Customs and U.S. Border Patrol facilities.

Some activities include tours of the southwest border region, rigorous training agents go through and real life scenario training. Participants will interact with agents, be able to ask questions and express concerns, according to a Border Patrol press release.

Part of the academy may be physically challenging so participants should be in good physical health and must sign waivers before participating.

Call El Centro Sector Public Affairs Office at 760-335-5798 to request an application or more information. Only 20 slots are available and will be accepted on first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted through Jan. 18 and applicants are subject to a background check. Graduation certificates will be provided at the end of the course.
