MANA de Imperial Valley had its 2012 scholarship presentation June 15 at the Imperial Irrigation auditorium, 1285 Broadway Avenue in El Centro.

The scholarships were awarded to:

Nadia Blant is the daughter of Karl and Teressa Blant. She is a graduate of Southwest High School with a cumulative G.P.A. of 4.02. Nadia volunteered at the Go for the Gold games and asthma awareness day. School activities include debate director of the junior statesman of America Club and captain of both varsity track and field and varsity cross country. Nadia will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara, pursuing a degree in environmental studies.

Ashley Bermudez is the daughter of Salvador and Annette Bermudez. She is a graduate of Imperial High School with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.67. Ashley’s school activities include Key Club, campus life, student council, ASB and 2012 class president. She was captain of the basketball team, volleyball team and cross country. She also received MVP awards in basketball, volleyball, and track. A few of her awards include AVID student of the year, science award, girl’s state first alternate and California Scholarship Federation honors.  Some of her volunteer activities include Operation Beautiful, March of Dimes and Treats for Troops.  Ashley will attend San Diego State University and pursue a degree in kinesiology.

Kassandra Buzo is the daughter of Luis Buzo and Veronica Iribe. She is a graduate of Brawley Union High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.83. Kassandra was involved in Brawley’s Cattle Call Dinner, Lion’s Club Breakfast, Women’s Breakfast and Brawley’s Wetland project. She was also a member of the math club, Future Farmers of America, California Scholarship Federation and The Junior State of America Club, a political awareness club. She will attend Cal Poly Pomona pursuing a degree in zoology.

Victoria Carrillo is the daughter of Angela and Romaldo Carrillo. She is a graduate of Brawley Union High School and achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.88. Victoria’s school activities included BUHS Key Club, Rotary Interact Club, link crew, Hermanitas, mock trial and CSF.  Awards she received include AP Scholar, Rotary youth leadership award, Girls delegate, and Imperial County best courtroom journalist. Victoria will attend San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus pursuing a degree in criminal justice. 

Etydria Cíntora is the daughter of Didria and Edgar Cíntora. She is a graduate of Calexico High School with a cumulative GPA of 4.26. She is ranked sixth out of a class of 611.  Throughout high school Etydria was a member of CSF and the National Honors Society. In her senior year, she became a life member in CSF and a NHS Scholar. Etydria’s volunteer activities include raising funds for the Cancer Resource Center, participating in the Men’s Shelter Blanket drive and organizing a drive for the Neighborhood House. Etydria will attend the University of California, Los Angeles and pursue a degree in biology.

Anagabriela Cordero is the daughter of Alma and Gabriel Cordero. She graduated from Southwest High with a GPA of 3.74. Anagabriela was active in the Southwest Academy of the Visual and Performing Arts, varsity cheer for three years and captain of varsity cheer her senior year. Anagabriela was also an ASB class officer all four years of high school. Her community service activities include volunteering for the Lay Brother Feed the Poor Drive, dancing for a cure and serving at soup night. Anagabriela will attend San Francisco State University and pursue a degree in theater/drama.

Bianca Cruz is the daughter of Rosalinda and Luis Cruz. She is a graduate of Central Union High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.9. Bianca was ASB president for two years, AVID treasurer, school site council representative, interact secretary and vice president of the Spartan runners club. Her volunteer work includes the Children’s Fair, Salvation Army, Cancer Resource Center, and Mid-Valley Pop Warner. Her academic achievements and other awards include CSF every semester, AVID officer award, California representative at the National Youth Leadership Conference and homecoming queen.  Bianca will attend San Diego State University pursuing a degree in business accounting.

Erin Evangelist is the daughter of Todd and Raquel Evangelist. She is a graduate of Central Union High School with a cumulative GPA of 4.23. Erin was a Campus Life student leader, ASB commissioner of records, a volleyball clinic coach, a CAHSEE math tutor and a link crew leader. Her academic achievements include National Hispanic Recognition Scholar, NHS scholar and four years on CSF. Erin’s volunteer activities include preschool teacher at Faith Assembly and classroom assistant in the El Centro Elementary School District’s summer academy. Erin will attend the University of Arizona and pursue a degree in civil engineering.

Irasema Ferrel is the daughter of Alma and Ramon Ferrel. She is a graduate of Calipatria High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.29. Irasema has volunteered as a tutor and an office assistant at Freemont Elementary. In addition to her academic achievements, which include honor roll and speech and debate, Irasema’s extracurricular activities, include Upward Bound, softball, ASB, and the migrant program. Irasema will attend California State University, Chico pursuing a degree in nursing.

Stephanie Fernandez is the daughter of Rodolfo and Maria Fernandez. She graduated from Calexico High with a cumulative GPA of 3.68. Stephanie was active in the Calexico High School band, the school drill team, FHA, Gear Up and club life. Stephanie was also a youth softball assistant and an assistant at ballet classes at the Calexico Community Center. Stephanie will attend Southwestern Community College pursuing the field of business administration.

Selina Flores is the daughter of Mercedes and Poli Flores, Jr. She is a graduate of CHS with a cumulative GPA of 3.94. Raquel was active in ASB, the marching/concert band, link crew, FFA, and the volleyball team. She was also a member of CSF and NHS. Her community service activities include Neighborhood House, American Cancer Society fundraisers, and working as a volunteer at Twin City Feed.  Raquel will attend the University of California, Los Angeles pursuing a degree in psychology.

Kassandra Gonzalez is the daughter of Richardo and Martha Reyes. She is a graduate of CUHS with a GPA of 3.43. Kassandra was active in French Club, Mexican American Club, AVID and Upward Bound where she received the “Most Helpful Award”. She volunteered at a Seeley preschool, the PAL boxing club, and was a candy striper at El Centro Regional Medical Center. Kassandra will pursue a health science degree.

Brenda Gutierrez is the daughter of Ramon and Gloria Gutierrez. She is a graduate of Southwest High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.66. Brenda participated in the Mexican American Club, Advanced Placement Club, Relay for Life and Interact Club. Academic recognition and awards include highest GPA, CSF honor roll, and migrant program student of the year. Brenda will attend the University of California, Irvine pursuing a degree in foreign language.

Kristabel Huerta is the daughter of Jeannette and Chris Celaya. She is a graduate of Southwest High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.65. Kristabel did volunteer work for the San Diego blood bank and Relay for Life. She also participated in the SHS Beautification Day project.  Kristabel will attend San Diego State University and will pursue a degree in nursing.

Monica Huerta is the daughter of Jose and Norma Huerta. She graduated from Southwest High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.65. Monica was president of the Mexican American Club and a link crew leader. She volunteered monthly at a Food Distribution Center in Heber and also volunteered at the Heber public library during story time. Monica will attend California State University, San Marcos and pursue a degree in social work.

Rosa Jáuregui  is the daughter of Rosa Crespo and José Jáuregui. She is a graduate of CHS with a cumulative GPA of 4.00. Rosa’s activities include Asian Pacific Youth Leadership, link crew, CSF, NHS, Future Homemakers of America (FHA) and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Rosa has also participated in IVROP’s medical assistant and medical terminology classes. She will attend San Diego State University pursuing a degree in nursing

Alexandra Jimenez is the daughter of Leonor Jimenez. She is a graduate of Southwest High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.65. Alexandra participated in soccer, track, cross country, volleyball, and softball. In addition, Alexandra was a volunteer in the junior auxiliary program at ECRMC. Alexandra will attend Whittier College pursuing a degree in biochemistry.
