CALEXICO - U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested two men and seized 92 pounds of marijuana estimated to be worth $73,000 Friday evening near the Imperial Sand Dunes, according to a press release.
Around 9 p.m., agents from the Calexico station saw two people climbing over the international boundary fence east of Calexico and then found two Mexican men, ages 23 and 26, hiding in the brush south of Interstate 8.
Agents also found two packages of marijuana weighing more than 92 pounds nearby.
The men and drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Man arrested in hit-and-run
EL CENTRO - El Centro police arrested a man suspected of driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a car accident Monday night, according to a press release.
A hit-and-run collision occurred at 12th Street and Adams Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when a 2003 Honda Civic went north on 12th Street through the intersection, hitting a 2006 Jeep Liberty going east on Adams Avenue.
Jonathan Knowlton, 24, of El Centro was driving the Civic and fled the area but after a few minutes, he was stopped and arrested by Officer William Yu.
A 23-year-old woman was driving the Jeep, but no one was injured in the collision, according to the release. Both cars had moderate damage and were towed.
Knowlton was booked into Imperial County jail on charges of misdemeanor hit and run and driving under the influence and is being held on $1,427 bail.
Authorities realized the other driver was unlicensed so she was cited and released.
Prison visitor arrested
CALIPATRIA - A woman visiting Calipatria State Prison was arrested Sunday morning after authorities found marijuana in her car, according to a prison official.
A visiting gate officer inspected the trunk of a car driven by visitor Nicole Rhoden, 30, of Victorville and detected what appeared to be marijuana, Calipatria Lt. Jorge Santana said.
Rhoden was escorted to the visiting parking lot where she agreed to have her car searched, and authorities then found 16.5 grams of marijuana on the front passenger seat.
Rhoden was booked into the Imperial County jail. The inmate she was visiting is staying in his cell pending further review, but the drugs weren’t packaged in a way to indicate she was planning on trying to give them to him.
Prison inmate stabs other inmate
A Calipatria State Prison inmate allegedly stabbed another inmate Saturday afternoon as the two were returning to their cells, according to a prison official.
Inmate Michael Coleman, 40 of Virginia, is accused of stabbing inmate Jodi Johnson, 32, of Los Angeles in the back around 3:45 p.m., Calipatria Lt. Jorge Santana said.
Prison staff responded utilizing pepper spray to quell the attack, and Johnson had one stabbing injury to his back in the end. He was treated and transported by ambulance before being flown to a trauma center due to a suspected collapsed lung, Santana said.
Coleman was placed in the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit, and a 3/4-inch wide, flat metal weapon sharpened at one end with a white cloth handle was recovered.

Gunshots reported
EL CENTRO - Nine to 10 gunshots were reported early Tuesday morning near a truck stop on Wake Avenue, according to El Centro Police logs. An inspection of the area did not show signs of a disturbance or gun battle.
Daughter’s father hits husband
A woman living on the 1500 block of Holt Avenue reported that her father-in-law showed up and hit her husband shortly after midnight Tuesday. The suspect, a Holtville resident, left the location in a white Honda Accord and headed toward Waterman Avenue and Main Street. The victim said he declined to prosecute his father, asking instead that he be advised not to enter his property without permission.
