Juneau Man Breaks Through Ice on Mendenhall Lake

A Juneau man says it's dangerous to be on the lake in front of Mendenhall Glacier, and he speaks from experience.

Juneau Nordic Ski Club volunteer groomer Scott Fischer tells KINY-radiohe was setting track Wednesday when his snowmobile broke through thin ice a quarter-mile from shore on Mendenhall Lake.

He says it likely would not have supported a person walking.

Fischer says the snowmobile sank to the level of his waist.

He tried crawling on ice and kept breaking through for 20 feet.  He eventually pulled himself out and crawled for another 50 feet until he could stand on thicker ice and walk.

He hoped to return to retrieve his snowmobile later Wednesday.
