The City of Wichita has new regulations for trash service. Now, companies hope they can use them to get your business. The new rules started this month. They require companies to charge based on how much you throw away and to offer recycling.
“In Wichita we see a lot of the people have been with one of the national companies before and they prefer the service they get with local haulers,” said Sanitation Services president Mark Raccuglia. He explains why so many new companies have gotten into the market.
When Lies Trash sold its business to Waste Management last February, several people saw opportunity.
“There can be a lot of independents, there's room for them with the number of stops Lies had,” said Raccuglia.
“There are several new trash haulers probably 3 or 4 new ones, Sanitation Services we started up 9 months ago."
When Lies sold, roughly 40,000 customers went to national company Waste Management. But now new local companies like Sanitation Services are offering deals like free trash service and discounted rates to attract customers.
“We've been putting out flyers, most of the west side. We pick up the West side, and the east side, and we're trying to ramp up and take over that void that was left when Lies sold out,” said Raccuglia.
It's working for Sanitation Services. Its picked up 6,000 customers since it started 9 months ago. A new 10 year commitment from the city not to franchise has left the market open to any company who wants in.
“That gives you a little bit of stability, you can build on that, they're not going to come in tomorrow and take your business away,” said Raccuglia.
Also in the last 9 months, Waste Link, Ace Disposal, and Best Value Services have opened.
