ROCKY MOUNT, Va. -

A 7-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed by his 12-year-old brother on Monday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The boys were playing at a neighbor’s home.

The 12-year-old boy found a handgun and accidentally fired the gun, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The 7-year-old died immediately.

The shooting happened around 11:45 a.m. Monday on Double Oaks Lane in the Burnt Chimney area.

No charged have been filed.

“In light of this tragedy, this a good opportunity for folks to realize that gun safety is so important,” said Phillip Young, a lieutenant for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

School leaders say they are aware of the situation and say there is a system in place to help anyone deal with this tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with family that are affected and also the school community that's affected,” Franklin County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Church said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the seven year old was playing at a neighbor’s residence with his twelve year old brother. The twelve year old found a handgun and accidentally discharged the firearm, striking and instantly killing the seven year old.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved in this time of tragedy.

A 7-year-old boy was shot and killed in Franklin County on Monday.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting call on Double Oaks Lane a little before noon Monday. When they got there they found the boy on the floor with a gunshot wound.

He died at the scene, according to investigators.

So far, no charges have been filed in this death investigation.

Neighbors tell WDBJ7 everyone in the community is close to each other.

"On April 21, 2014 at 11:46 AM the Office of the Sheriff received a 911 call in reference to a shooting on Double Oaks Lane in the Burnt Chimney community of Franklin County.

Deputies arrived on the scene a few minutes later and found a seven year old male, with a gunshot wound, lying on the floor of the residence. The juvenile was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies secured the scene and obtained a search warrant. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time."
