Roanoke-based Grand Home Furnishings will buy four West Virginia stores from a competitor.  Grand will consolidate some of the stores with its existing locations in West Virginia.

Here is the complete announcement from Grand:

Grand Home Furnishings, the Roanoke, Virginia based retailer of furniture and mattresses with stores in Virginia, Tennessee and West Virginia, is pleased to announce that it has contracted to acquire the John Eye/Big Sandy Furniture stores in West Virginia.

Those stores are located in Beckley, Lewisburg, Princeton and Summersville. The parties anticipate that the transaction will close in August.

The John Eye/Big Sandy stores are currently part of the Big Sandy Superstore furniture chain based in Franklin Furnace, Ohio with stores in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. None of Big Sandy Superstores’ other locations are affected.

First opened in 1939 in Beckley as John Eye Furniture, the company added three other locations and in 1996 merged with the Big Sandy Superstore chain. Long-time furniture retailer, John Eye, who operated the family business and is retiring, is pleased that his stores will transition to Grand Home Furnishings, also a family business operated now by third generation family members.

Grand Home Furnishings presently has locations in Beckley and Lewisburg. Upon completion of the transaction, Grand plans to move from its present Beckley location into the former John Eye/Big Sandy Beckley location.  The John Eye/Big Sandy location in Lewisburg will close. John Eye/Big Sandy locations in Princeton and Summersville will become Grand Home Furnishings locations this Fall.

Grand currently operates 17 other stores. Locations in Virginia are Bristol, Charlottesville, Christiansburg, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Roanoke (3), Smith Mountain Lake, Waynesboro, Winchester and Wise. Tennessee locations are Johnson City and Kingsport. Current West Virginia locations are Beckley and Lewisburg.

Grand was founded in Roanoke in 1911. Currently the company employs a total of 550 people at its stores, warehouses and corporate offices.
