LYNCHBURG, Va. -

How many people does it take to flip a boat?

In Lynchburg the answer is 45.  A group of friends got together on Richmond Avenue Wednesday night, to move a boat weighing almost 3,000 pounds.

The giant vessel is one of 20 that will be floating in this year's James River Batteau Festival.  The annual event re-creates the way cargo was moved on the water centuries ago, before the invention of trains and canals.

There are planned stops every night in different communities along the river.  The event is hosted by the Virginia Canals & Navigation Society.

"It's a lot of fun," said Isaac Schumacher, a batteau festival participant.  "It's a lot of fun to build and take care of (the batteaus) and the festival itself is always a blast."

Teams participating in the batteau festival will set sail from Percival's Island in Lynchburg at 11 a.m. June 15.  They will travel down the James River, arriving in Richmond June 22.
