A shortage of one medication is forcing local pharmacies to take a huge hit.

Doxycycline is used to treat a number of illnesses, including Lyme disease.

Pharmacists said there was a major shortage just a few months ago and that’s caused prices to go through the roof.

They also said there’s been an increase use of the drug and some local pharmacies are concerned the prices will only continue to rise.

If they do, some said they might not be able to supply it anymore.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said pharmacist Larry Hill. “I just couldn’t believe it. I kept shopping around. In fact, I was at the point I wasn’t going to buy any for a while and then a company I deal told me they got a deal on it and I did end up buying it.”

Hill said the price of doxycycline has more than tripled for him.

Summer is known as Lyme disease season.

WDBJ 7 reached out to infectious disease clinic at Carilion to see if they have been affected by the shortage. A spokesman said they have not seen a lot of Lyme cases this year and that they are not having any trouble getting the medication.
