Many families are feeling the financial pinch as children get ready to head back to school. But one church stepped up to help.

Pembroke First United Methodist Church held a Back to School Bazaar Sunday to help families in need get the basics, like backpacks, school supplies, clothes and shoes.

Free haircuts and eye screenings were also offered.

Organizer, Christy Jones, says this event can make all the difference for a child in need.

"This project is basically to connect with kids and to let kids know that regardless of what's going on around them, there's people who love and care about them and we want to make sure that they have a good start to the school year." >>

Last year the church says it served 270 children living in Giles County.
