In keeping with the holiday spirit, volunteers from Holiday Hearts for Vets came together for a good cause this afternoon in Rockbridge County.

The organization, started by Sandy Collier, makes Christmas brighter for those who served their country.

Its mission is to help clean, organize and decorate the homes of older, disabled or widowed veterans during the holiday season.

Not only that, they come back in January and take all the decorations back down and store the for next year.

Collier says veterans are often overlooked and she and her team want them to feel special, especially during the holidays.

"It's to pay it forward to the vets who served our country and to let them know that they're not forgotten and we love Christmas and we love our vets," Collier told Your Hometown News Leader.

The organization also gives the veterans gifts baskets, certificates and other holiday goodies.
