UPDATE: Three people hurt in accident on I-77 in Carroll County
Three people were hurt Monday in an accident that backed up traffic on Interstate 77 in Carroll County for seven miles at one point.
Two people inside of the car had to be airlifted to the hospital. One of them was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The accident happened shortly after 2 p.m. just north of mile marker 22, in the Austinville area.
According to Virginia State Police, a tire came off the 1982 Dodge Ram Charger, causing it to lose control. The vehicle went into the median and flipped.

Interstate 77 North in Carroll County is back open following an accident Monday afternoon.
At one point both lanes of I-77 North were closed, which led to a seven-mile backup.
An accident has closed Interstate 77 North in Carroll County.
The accident is at mile marker 21. Both northbound lanes of I-77 are closed because of the wreck. Mile marker 21 is in the Austinville area.
It’s not clear how long I-77 North will be closed for, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Northbound traffic is backed up about seven miles.
No detours have been established yet.
A helicopter took at least one person to the hospital. A charred-out car is visible on the highway.
