One person is in the hospital following a crash on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County Friday afternoon.

It happened in the northbound lane near mile marker 119.

The driver of a GMC Yukon, Donnie Goodman, Sr., 60, of Pound Mill, was taken to New River Valley Medical center for injuries and has been charged with reckless driving.

Goodman, Sr. was driving the Yukon in the north left lane of Interstate 81 when he tried to pass a Subaru Forester.

He then switched to the right lane, cut back over to the left, and clipped the Forester, causing it to hit a guard rail.

The Yukon also hit a guard rail before rolling over several times, according to a news release from Virginia State Police.

The driver of the Forester was not hurt in the crash.

No more information is being released at this time and the investigation is ongoing.


The accident has been cleared.


Drivers on Interstate 81 North in Montgomery County should expect delays because of an accident.

The accident is near mile marker 120. The north right lane and right shoulder are closed.

Traffic is backed up about two miles.
