ROANOKE, Va. -

Roanoke's Angels of Assisi needs your help now more than ever.

The organization is competing against 49 other shelter in the United States. It's all for Rachel Ray's $100K Challenge.

The contest is supposed to inspire shelters to increase pet adoptions.

Angels of Assisi of Roaonke is trying to increase adoptions from 393 last summer to 1,500 this summer.

So far, they’ve found homes for about 400 animals. Just this weekend, 40 animals found their forever homes.

Employees said the community has really stepped up to the plate to help find homes for these animals.

"It gives a really positive light and a fun light on adopting and for us,” said Angels of Assisi Executive Director Lisa O'Neill. “The real reason behind it is we are trying to get animals out of the Roanoke pound and bring Roanoke to no kill status so we are very close."

The grand prize winner gets $100,000 for their organization.

The competition started on June 1 and ends August 31.
