There's an anonymous donor out there willing to put up $50,000 to save the old Boones Mill depot, if the community can match that by contributing another $50,000.
But there's not much time to get all that money in; Norfolk Southern may tear it down after May 1 if the $100,000 total isn't collected to move the depot off railroad property.
Today, leaders in Boones Mill urged donations from anyone interested in preserving local history.
“This isn't just a piece of history. We really feel it'll be a catalyst to what Boones Mill and this end of the county wants to do in the future. Boones Mill has somewhat languished over the last 40 years and we're just trying to reinvigorate this town. ,” Mayor Ben Flora said.
There's a restoration committee dedicated to saving the depot. Eventually they'd like to see it turned into the town's museum.
